Land Dispute Aftermath in Riau
Rosmah, a 28 year old mother of three children, cries next to her house, destroyed last December during a protest where hundreds of residents of Suluk Bongkal village had been defending their land against the P.T. Arara Abadi logging company and were attacked by police and security staff. Around 700 of their houses were burnt to the ground, and their agricultural land and equipment was destroyed. The protest was held because the logging company wants 5000 acres of land owned by the Suluk Bongkal community for acacia plantation.

Residents of Suluk Bongkal, many of them women and children, demonstrate in front of the parliament building in Bengkalis, other set up a protest camp in front of the state court. On December 18th 2008 hundreds of residents of Suluk Bongkal, who had been defending their land against the P.T. Arara Abadi logging company, were attacked by police and security staff. Around 700 of their houses were burnt to the ground, and their agricultural land and equipment was destroyed. A 2-year-old girl lost her life as she fell down a well and drowned whilst fleeing from the attack. P.T. Arara Abadi wants to seize 5000 acres of land owned by the Suluk Bongkal community for acacia plantation.
