Aerial views of the coal export Kinder Morgan Myrtle Grove Terminal, south of New Orleans. The 150-acre facility has the capacity to store 1.3 million tons of coal. Kinder Morgan plans to expand and start shipping millions more tons each year. As coal plants around the United States are shut down in the face of community opposition and rising costs, coal company CEOs are seeking to export more coal to foreign countries. In addition to expanding facilities, Kinder Morgan and other companies have set their sights on the Pacific Northwest, hoping to export as much as 150 million tons of coal through six proposed coal export terminals in Oregon and Washington.
