Deforestation in Mexico
Deforested area in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. In 1989 the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve was decreed and it was registered in the UNESCO Man and iosphere Program in 1993. Part of the 723 thousand hectares that conform this protected area, fall within La Montaña. Furthermore, La Montaña has been established as part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor which is a multiregional project that comprises several countries from Central America, and receives funds from the Global Environmental Facility. La Montaña is considered a ‘‘hot spot’’ of deforestation in Campeche, since deforestation rates increased from 0.3 percent during the period 1988–2000 to 0.7 percent during the period 2000–2005. Even when large proportions of forest are still preserved (84 percent between 2000 and 2005) it shows a clear deforestation trend.

In spite of the Mexican government reports to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) that deforestation rates are rapidly decreasing, independent information from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and even from other government agencies, show this is not true. According to these studies, Mexico still looses almost half a million hectares of forests every year.
