Deforestation and climate change drive the desertification of Southern and South-Eastern Romania. On a road trip with activists and photojournalists, we documented the impact of the climate crisis in Dobrogea during one of the driest summers of the last 50 years. Many rural areas have become dependent on water transports and entire communities are left without crops, watching as the sands slowly swallow their lands.

Over the next 30 years, more than 40% of Romania's territory will become an arid steppe. Climate scientists indicate that, in a moderate scenario, over 10 million Romanians will be affected by rising temperatures, loss of water reserves and desertification.

Investing in protective measures against the climate crisis should be a priority for all governments. Forests are the natural solution to guard us against extreme weather and warming.
