The Stop Deep Sea Oil Flotilla was formed to protest against Brazilian oil company Petrobras’ plans to drill for oil in the deep waters off the East Cape. In April and May 2011, the flotilla engaged with and successfully disrupted a seismic survey the company was running at the time. It was during this engagement that Elvis Teddy, the skipper of a te Whanau a Apanui-owned fishing boat, was arrested. On 26 July, 2012, he was acquitted on the charges relating to his arrest. A judge at the Tauranga District Court ruled that the section of law the authorities were operating under had no jurisdiction past 12 nautical miles from the coast.
