Tree fungus hericium erinaceus (also called Lion's Mane Mushroom, Bearded Tooth Mushroom), on deadwood log in mixed beech forest in public forest in the Spessart Mountains.
Beech forests and mixed beech forests in the Spessart Mountains have areas with old beech trees, that are ecologically particularly valuable. Deciduous forests, as a CO2 sink, are of importance for the climate and provide home to numerous animal and plant species. Greenpeace demands to immediately stop logging in old deciduous forests in public ownership with beech trees older than 140 years until it is agreed not to use 10 percent of the German public forests for any forestry uses.
