Channels like these are dug by plantation companies to drain carbon-rich peatland, before the area is cleared and burnt in preparation for planting. Every year up to 1.8 billion tonnes of climate changing greenhouse gas emissions are released by the degradation and burning of Indonesia’s peatlands – that is up to 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions from less than 0.1% of the land on earth.Locations:Central Kalimantan-Indonesia-Kapuas River-Mentangai-Southeast AsiaDate:4 Oct, 2007Credit:© Greenpeace / Natalie BehringMaximum size:4368px X 2912pxKeywords:Canoes-Climate (campaign title)-Day-Deforestation-East Asian ethnicities-Fishers-Forest fire-Forests (campaign title)-KWCI (GPI)-One person-Outdoors-People-RiversShoot:Forest Areas Cleared for Palm Oil in IndonesiaThe region of Kalimantan is used to accommodate large scale palm oil plantations. Palm oil companies burn the drained peatlands to plant palm oil saplings and so release vast amounts of peatland carbon in the form of carbon dioxide, which is the leading greenhouse gas. The companies are acting in flagrant violating of Indonesian laws on forest management and an existing Presidential decree designed to protect peatlands, according to investigations conducted by Greenpeace.Related Collections:Burning up Borneo Greenpeace ReportFinal Countdown (Report, Pictures & Video)Caught Red Handed (All Photographers)IPCC Report Release (All Photographers, Photos & Videos)Cooking the Climate
