MV Greenpeace set out from New Zealand carrying full crew, a bigger helicopter, a prefabricated base building and supplies for the 12-month stay for the four winterers. MV Greenpeace arrives in the vicinity of Ross Island, 200 metres off the beach at Cape Evans. Using the heli to lift sections of the base ashore, the camp was set up within three weeks. Four winterers for the 2nd Antarctica voyage/expedition to set up a base camp, training on the Mount Cook, New Zealand, previous to their voyage to Antarctica. Team: Leader/mechanic New Zealander Kevin Coaglen, Radio operator Justin Farrelly, West German scientist Gudrun Gaudian and the base doctor Cornelius van Dorp; Grace O'Sullivan, Henk Haazen, Hanne Sorensen; Natalie Mestre (now Natalie Mestre-Thomas); Davey Edwards.
