Bowen Basin in Australia
The Bowen Basin contains the largest coal reserves in Australia, an area of over 60,000 square kilometres in Central Queensland and there are proposals for extensive new mining activities — either extensions of existing mines or new mines entirely. For mercury, nine of the top ten highest mercury-polluting coal mines are in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. Aerials show the existing coal developments in the area contrasted with the natural beauty of the area.
