Composite Photo of Apo Island Marine Protected Area
Divers from Silliman University, Coastal Conservation and Education foundation, and Greenpeace are surveying the massive coral damage in Apo Island caused by unprecedented and extreme weather events. The top photo shows healthy corals of a dive site, while the photo below shows damaged corals of a marine sanctuary, both taken at Apo Island, Dauin Negros Oriental. Divers also hold banners reading "Save our Seas".
The Marine Protected Area (MPA) was destroyed by Typhoon Pablo in December 2012. An increase in extreme weather events is one of the predicted effects of climate change.

MY Esperanza in the Philippines
The Greenpeace ship MY Esperanza is in the Philippines for a three week journey starting in the Visayas and ending in Manila. The ship, on her Philippine leg of the “Ocean Defenders Tour of South East Asia 2013”, will tell the story of the richness and the beauty of the Philippine seas, expose destruction that causes marine degradation and call for urgent government action to protect its rich biodiversity.
