Forest Fires Documentation in Riau
Indonesia’s forest moratorium, in place since 2011 and due to expire on May 13 2015, calls for a stop to new concessions for logging and pulp and paper or palm oil. Greenpeace investigations show however that the moratorium is often ignored because it lacks the force of law. The moratorium must be strengthened in order to legally protect all natural forest and peatland, both inside and outside concessions. Unless the moratorium is strengthened, at least 48.5 million hectares of forest – over three times the area of Java – will remain under threat.
