The Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise is in the area as part of the “Protect the Oceans” tour, a year long pole to pole expedition. The aim of the expedition is to raise awareness among decision-makers and the international community of the need to protect the oceans and to safeguard biodiversity and ensure the sustainable use of the resources on which many of the world's poorest and most vulnerable people depend.
