Melt Lakes in Greenland
A tiny figure on the frozen landscape of Greenland. The image was taken on the perimeter of the ice sheet where glaciers start moving towards the sea. The vivid blue pools are melt lakes forming in the summer season, cracks and fissures in the glaciated landscape can be seen at the bottom of the pools. The pools appear so blue, partly because of the lack of impurities and absence of salt in the water. The photographer took the image from a helicopter, collecting his colleague from the ice before returning to a ship.
