Shoot:
Blockade of Nuclear Waste Transport in Borssele
Greenpeace blocks a nuclear waste transport in Borssele. The transport consists of one container with 7 high level radioactive exhausted fuel rods. This nuclear waste remains dangerous for 240,000 years. The train with the nuclear waste is on its way from the nuclear power plant Borssele to the reprocessing plant of Cogéma in La Hague, France. Greenpeace demonstrates with this action against the plan of the intended new government coalition of the Dutch political parties CDA, LPF and VVD to keep the nuclear power plant Borssele operational till 2007 instead of the agreed year 2003.
The nuclear reprocessing is disastrous for the environment and proliferation. Despite the pollution and international treaties that commit the Netherlands to store nuclear waste immediately, Borssele continues this polluting process. Greenpeace calls on the new government to hold to the decision to close Borssele and to invest in sustainable energy like sun, wind and biomass.
