Oiled Birds Art Works Exhibition in NZ
One of the artists, Mike Barnell, holds one of the 10 canvas prints created using the body of a bird killed by the Rena oil disaster. Behind him are some of the 150 posters, made using the same technique, displayed in Khyber Pass Road, Auckland. Up to 20,000 birds are estimated to have died in the 350 tonnes of bunker oil spilled from the Rena; and yet a thousand times more oil could come from a spill from a deep sea oil rig. Greenpeace is campaigning to stop the creation of a series of deep sea oil drilling zones off New Zealand's coasts.

Oiled Birds Art Works Exhibition in NZ
Art works at the Oil on Canvas exhibition at a temporary gallery space in Auckland. The images on display were created using two of the estimated 20,000 birds killed by the oil spill that came from the grounded cargo ship the Rena, and a cupful of bunker oil that came from the wreck. While the Rena leaked 350 tonnes of oil, a blowout on a deep sea oil rig, could result in a spill a thousand times worse. Greenpeace NZ is campaigning against the creation of a deep sea oil industry in New Zealand. The exhibition, and creation of the prints, was organised by Greenpeace, in conjunction with the advertising company Publicis Mojo. It is running until Friday December 16.
