Palm oil companies burn the drained peatlands to plant palm oil saplings and so release vast amounts of peatland carbon in the form of carbon dioxide, which is the leading greenhouse gas. The companies are acting in flagrant violating of Indonesian laws on forest management and an existing Presidential decree designed to protect peatlands, according to investigations conducted by Greenpeace.
