The Banaue rice terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The terraces were declared a GE free zone, by the provincial government in 2009. Rice terraces are diverse ecosystems where varied vegetables, such as sweet potatoes and watercress, are grown next to rice. Fish and snails are also found in the rice paddies. Families also maintain home gardens with chickens and pigs. Such crop and food diversity ensures a healthy and balanced diet for the farmers’ families and their communities.Locations:Banaue-Philippines-Southeast AsiaDate:23 Jan, 2014Credit:© Greenpeace / John NovisMaximum size:5760px X 3840pxKeywords:Asian ethnicities-Day-Farmers-Genetic engineering-Golden rice-KWCI (GPI)-Local population-Outdoors-Planting-Plants-Rice is Life (campaign title)-SAGE (campaign title)-Sustainable agriculture-Three people-Traditional farming-UNESCO-WomenShoot:Golden Rice Photo-Story in the PhilippinesCommunities of farmers, religious leaders, mothers, academics, chefs and politicians reject genetically engineered (GE) ‘Golden’ rice as a cure to the vitamin A deficiency (VAD) problem in the Philippines. Greenpeace celebrates the natural diversity of food and farming in the Philippines as the real cure to Vitamin A deficiency. Genetically engineered (GE) food such as ‘Golden’ rice is environmentally irresponsible, poses risks to human health and could compromise food and nutrition security. Facilitating people's access to a varied diet of ecologically farmed food, through home and communal gardens, is the most effective and sustainable solution to tackle vitamin deficiencies in the long term and ensure healthy and nutritious food for people.Related Collections:Golden Rice Photo-Story and Documentary
