The MSV Fennica is tied up behind; crew members and a harbor pilot discovered a leak in the Fennica's ballast tank, on July 10, forcing the vessel back to Dutch. Reports say the gash measured approximately 39 inches long by less than a half an inch wide. The MSV Fennica is one of 29 vessels and two icebreakers that will head to the Chukchi Sea this summer in support of Shell's planned arctic drilling operations. The vessel will be used primarily for ice reconnaissance and management, but also carries the well capping stack, a key piece of containment equipment that is considered the last line of defense in the case of a major blowout while drilling.Locations:Alaska-Dutch Harbor-North America-Unalaska Island-United States of AmericaDate:13 Jul, 2015Credit:© Mark Meyer / GreenpeaceMaximum size:4912px X 7360pxKeywords:Climate (campaign title)-Close ups-Day-Industrial cranes-KWCI (GPI)-Oceans (campaign title)-Oil drilling-Oil rigs-Outdoors-Save the Arctic (campaign title)-Shell (commercial business)-Signs-Summer-Water-Wharfs (Docks)Shoot:Shell Oil Equipment in Dutch Harbor in AlaskaShell drilling equipment and support vessels in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Shell is staging its equipment in preparation of drilling for oil in the Chukchi Sea in the Arctic region of Alaska. The icebreaker Fennica came back to Dutch Harbor after suffering a gash to its hull last week while en route to Shell’s proposed Arctic drill site. The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating what may have been damage caused by striking a previously uncharted shoal.
