Greenpeace is calling for the closure of pockets of international waters in the Pacific to all types of fishing in order to rescue tuna from depletion of stocks. Longliners mainly target bigeye, yellowfin and albacore tuna, destined for sashimi markets in Japan and other countries where this food has become popular. Scientists have warned that some Pacific tuna stocks, such as bigeye and yellowfin tuna, are being fished beyond their limits. In addition, approximately 35% of longline catch consists of non-target species, including threatened oceanic sharks, and turtles.Locations:International Waters-Pacific OceanDate:16 Oct, 2009Credit:© Greenpeace / Paul HiltonMaximum size:5164px X 3542pxKeywords:Day-Fisheries-Fishers-Fishing (Industry)-Fishing ships-KWCI (GPI)-Longline fishing-Marine Reserves (campaign title)-Men-Oceans (campaign title)-Oceans (topography)-Two peopleShoot:Pacific Ocean MY Esperanza TourThe Greenpeace ship MY Esperanza’s tour in the Pacific Ocean is part of an international campaign for clean and healthy oceans through the creation of a global network of marine reserves and effective enforcement of laws that protect ocean life. Greenpeace is monitoring the pockets of international waters that Pacific Island Countries want closed from all fishing activities in order to protect the declining tuna stocks. Already during the tour, the Esperanza has exposed illegal transshipment activities by Taiwanese ships, documented the oceans plunder by a Japanese ship and confiscated several fish aggregating devices (FADs) which are currently banned. Purse seine fishing vessels set their huge nets on these FADs taking everything with it, including a large by-catch of unwanted fish. Greenpeace is campaigning for a global network of fully protected marine reserves, covering 40% of our oceans.Related Collections:DWF in Taiwan 2020 Report and Press Conferences (Photos & Videos)Pacific Ocean MY Esperanza Tour (Photos & Videos)
