Up to 7,500 people died and a further half a million were injured when lethal gas leaked from the former Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, 1984. After the disaster, the company (now Dow Chemicals) abandoned the factory leaving tonnes of poisonous chemicals strewn around the site. The people of Bhopal have been properly compensated and left with a toxic legacy. More than 16,000 people have died since the disaster.
