Driftnet Campaign in the Bering Sea
Greenpeace campaigns in the Bering Sea to expose the atrocities associated with the use of large-scale driftnets, which entangle and kill most species that swim into them, including dolphins, shark, seal, squid and many species of birds. As a result of these efforts, the United Nations invoked a moratorium on high seas large-scale driftnets in 1989, in response to public outrage at their indiscriminate destruction to sea life. In 1992 the UN banned the use of drift nets longer than 2.5 km long in international waters.
