Stop Whale Meat Transit via Germany on `MV Eilbek´ - News Access
Hamburg: 10.7.2013: Greenpeace activists climb on board the containership 'Eilbek' which transports whale meat to Japan. Four of the sea defenders have fixed themselves to the 170 meters long mooring ropes of the freighter. At the same time ten environmentalists protest in inflatables around the ship. Banners read “Stop whale meat trade!” On board the ship of the shipping company “Eilbek GmbH & Co. KG” are six containers with fin whale meat from Iceland on its way to Japan via Hamburg and Rotterdam harbours.
Greenpeace demands a legally binding regulation that prohibits the transport of whale meat via German ports in general as Germany has signed the international whaling and trading prohibition. Tolerating the transit via Germany does make Germany a supporter of whaling though.
Interview: Iris Menn, Greenpeace Germany Marine Biologist and Oceans expert.
