Miner with Black Lung in Appalachia
A retired coal mine supervisor breathes medication for his black lung disease through a tube. Health care is an unaffordable luxury in McDowell County, West Virginia. Around 75% of people here have little to no health insurance, some have no access at all. McDowell County has some of the highest rates of diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and respiratory problems in the entire U.S. It is also one of the poorest counties in the U.S.
