Protest at Lignite Mine of Mátra Power Plant, Visonta
Greenpeace Hungary activists protest at the lignite mine of Mátra Power Plant. Mátra Power Plant is a functioning coal-fired power plant and biggest emitter of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The Hungarian government announced the closure of the power plant by 2025 (with plans to convert it into a gas power plant), but according to current plans and local authorizations, the lignite mine will be significantly expanded.
Greenpeace Hungary demands the closure of the lignite mine and the end of burning of fossil fuels at the power plant. The right plan should be to move onto renewable energy at Mátra Power Plant.
The activists’ sign reads: Expanding a mine? For a power plant that’s closing down?!
