Fires Affect 800 Thousand Hectares in Corrientes, Argentina
More than 800 thousand hectares of wetlands, grasslands, plantations and native forests were destroyed by fire in the province of Corrientes, Argentina. The climate crisis, added to two years of extreme drought due to the La Niña phenomenon, increase the conditions for fires, many of them caused by intentional or negligent human activity. The burning of pastures for intensive livestock farming and the large number of plantations of exotic species further increase the chances that the fire will spread. Greenpeace calls on the government of Corrientes and the national government to significantly increase the infrastructure and brigade members to fight fires, and for the National Congress to declare both forest fires and clearing as a criminal offense and urgently sanction the Fire Fighting Law. Wetlands.
