Protest against Bolsonaro at UN HQ in New York City
COVID-19 masked Greenpeace US Activists in New York City demonstrate against Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's radical anti-environmental agenda in front of the United Nations Headquarters. Brazil's head of state annually speaks first at the UN General Assembly, and Bolsonaro has taken radical steps to dismantle environmental protections, attack the rights of Indigenous Peoples, restrict environmental law enforcement yielding the increasing deforestation rates and the worst number of fires in a decade. These fires, predominantly used to convert trees and vegetation for cattle pasture, are occurring not only in the Amazon Rainforest, but also the Cerrado Savanna Grasslands and the Pantanal Wetlands, hence the banner reading "Brasil em Chamas" referring to how the country overall is "in flames"
These three biomes are critical for a safe climate and curbing the extinction emergency.
