Oiled Birds Art Works Exhibition in NZ
The print of a small blue penguin. It was one an estimated 20,000 birds of killed by oil spilled from the container ship, Rena, which ran aground on the Astrolab Reef, about 20km from the Port of Tauranga on October 5, 2011. The image was created using a cupful of bunker oil that came from the wreck. The creation of 200 prints, was organised by Greenpeace, in conjunction with the advertising company Publicis Mojo as astark reminder of the dangers of opening up New Zealand waters to deep sea oil drilling. While the Rena leaked 350 tonnes of oil, a blowout on a deep sea oil rig, could result in a spill a thousand times worse. Greenpeace NZ is campaigning against the creation of a deep sea oil industry in New Zealand. The exhibition, and creation of the prints, was organised by Greenpeace, in conjunction with the advertising company Publicis Mojo.
