Six Climbers Scale Shell’s Arctic-Bound Oil Rig
Group portrait of six Greenpeace activists before they return from a six-day protest on board the Polar Pioneer oil rig in the Pacific Ocean. The six are (L-R): Aliyah Field (27) of the USA, Andreas Widlund (27) of Sweden, Johno Smith (32) of New Zealand, Miriam Friedrich (23) of Austria, Zoe Buckley Lennox (21) of and Jens Loewe (46) of Germany.
The climbers have intercepted the Arctic-bound Shell oil rig in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 750 miles north-west of Hawaii and have scaled the 38,000 tonne platform.
Shell intends to use the rig to drill for oil in the Chukchi Sea.
