Boarding of Bottom Trawler Playa de Menduina
Greenpeace activists hang a banner with the words, 'Deep Sea Destroyer' on the trawl doors of the EU deep sea bottom trawler Playa de Menduina, to protest against the destruction caused by this fishing practice. Bottom-trawling boats, the majority from EU countries, drag fishing gear weighing several tonnes across the sea bed, destroying marine wildlife and devastating life on underwater mountains - or 'seamounts'. Greenpeace is demanding a UN moratorium on bottom trawling on the high seas.
