Pod removed from Leiv Eiriksson Oil Rig
Police from the Knud Rasmussen Danish warship remove Greenpeace activists and take down the Arctic survival pod from the 53,000 tonne Leiv Eiriksson oil rig after a 4 day occupation. The two activists had been living in a survival pod suspended from the underside of the 53,000 tonne Leiv Eiriksson near where the giant drill-bit would have been sunk. Their presence there was stopping Edinburgh-based Cairn Energy from beginning drilling operations 180km to the west of Greenland. The Leiv Eiriksson is operated by Cairn Energy and is the only rig in the world currently set to begin new deep sea drilling in the Arctic – making it a clear and present danger to the pristine arctic environment.
