Nuclear Waste Train from France to Germany
Greenpeace activists who had fixed themselves to the railway line, attempting to stop the nuclear waste transport from La Hague to the intermediate storage in Gorleben, Germany, are removed by police. The CASTOR (Cask for Storage and Transport of Radioactive material) is a train convoy carrying eleven 100-tonne containers of radioactive waste. Measurements of these containers show that the radioactivity in each one is higher than what was released at Chernobyl in 1986 - this makes the CASTOR transport effectively a Chernobyl on wheels.
