Fort Chipewyan
The First Nations community of Fort Chipewyan lies on the Athabasca River, downstream from the Alberta tar sands. Its residents face abnormally high cancer rates and their traditional ways of life are at risk because of the effects of widespread pollution on water, land, and wildlife.

Kumi Naidoo Visits the Tar Sands in Canada
Executive Director of Greenpeace International, Kumi Naidoo visits the Alberta tar sands and meets with First Nations people from Fort Chipewyan to hear about the impacts of the tar sands on their community. Canada's tar sands are an oil reserve the size of England. Extracting the crude oil called bitumen from underneath unspoiled wilderness requires a massive industrialized effort with far-reaching impacts on the land, air, water, and climate, releasing five times more greenhouse gases than conventional oil production.
