Red Sea Diving Safari Camp - Red Sea Coastal Development in Egypt - 2006
Hossam Helmi, owner of Red Sea Diving Safari Camp in Shagra Bay, where truly pristine stretches of coastline still exist in Southern Egypt (20 Kilometer north of Marsa Alam). Construction of a new airport at nearby Marsa Alam is opening up the southernmost reaches of Egypt's Red Sea coast to tourism. Property rights have been snapped up and hotels are already being built along the previously desolate stretch of desert that leads to the Sudanese border. Crystal clear waters and unique coral reefs have made the Red Sea one of the world's prime diving destinations. Yet these reefs are threatened by problems such as overfishing, pollution and uncontrolled coastal development. Egypt's Red Sea coast has become a sprawling mass of concrete hotels and apartment blocks. In a matter of twenty years, the area has undergone large-scale development driven by the tourist dollar.
