Damming Activity in Kalimantan
Longgena Ginting, Country Director of Greenpeace Indonesia helps carry a sand bag they use to block a canal draining peatlands for plantations in Paduran Village, Sebangau Sub-district, Pulang Pisau Regency, Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. The province was the epicentre of Indonesia’s 2015 forest fires disaster.
Indonesia's peatlands cover just over 21 million hectares an area smaller than the UK. Yet this small area stores 57GtC, equivalent to more than 6 years of global emissions from fossil fuels. Peatland drainage causes emissions, leads to fires, and compromises communities.
