Direct Action at Batang Coal Power Plant in Indonesia
Activists from the Break Free Coalition, consisting of Greenpeace, WALHI and JATAM, occupy the piling barges operating in East Roban waters, Batang Regency, Central Java. The activists unfurl a big banner depicting the silhouette of a breathing child, calling for the termination of the construction of the coal fired power plant project.
The action is part of the global Break Free movement against fossil fuels.
Batang coal power plant is claimed to be the largest in Southeast Asia with a capacity of 2000 megawatts. It will release around 10.8 million tons of carbon into the atmosphere – equal to the total carbon emissions of Myanmar in 2009.
