Joint Inspection on Illegal Fishing Activities in Sierra Leone - News Access
Greenpeace and Sierra Leonean Fisheries Authorities conduct surveillance and inspect illegal fishing activities in the EEZ of Sierra Leone.
During a four days joint surveillance exercise between Greenpeace and the fisheries inspection of Sierra Leone, three fishing vessels have been arrested and sent to port and one vessel will be further investigated for various infractions ranging from illegal net sizes on board of the vessel, lack of administration of the fish that was caught and shark finning. Greenpeace also found numerous carcasses of sharks and manta rays on board several vessels.
During the ‘Hope in West Africa’ Tour, Greenpeace is in the West African region with the Esperanza. The vessel is visiting six countries, all members of the Sub Regional Fisheries Commission (SRFC), to advocate for the need for a regional management system to preserve the regions precious fisheries resources. The vessel is engaged in research, joint surveillance missions with local authorities and meetings with ministers and officials in the ports that are visited in Cabo Verde, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
