Woman Cleaning Algae on Greenhouse near Vandvaerksgaarden Factory Farm, Denmark
Former hospital chief physician and chief surgeon Ellen Appelquist has lived in her house for 44 years. It is located only 100 meters away from the industrial pig farm Vandvaerksgaarden in the small village of Tingerup. The pig farm has a strong negative impact on her life, Ellen reported to Greenpeace Nordic in Denmark. She mentioned that according to information she has the value of her house was lowered by 50,000 Euro because of the stench from the stables, and woodwork and tiles in her property are covered with green algae. Here, Ellen is washing away the algae from the glass walls of her greenhouse. She said: “I do this twice a year as the algae keeps on growing. I think they are nourished from the heavy content of nitrogen in the ammonia emitted from the stables and the manure tanks.” She added: “When the wind is coming from the wrong direction and the smell is bad, I feel sick with headache and stomach pain.”
