The industrial pig farm in the small village of Baarup around 60 kilometer west of Copenhagen is right in front of the balcony of former occupational therapist Eckhard Klattkowsky and former chief economist Bente Hansen’s bedroom. The distance is around 80 meters, and the heavy smell from the stalls and the smoke from the furnace according to them is overwhelming. This picture is taken from their bedroom balcony, so the farm and its chimneys are what they see. The farm, which used to be small, has grown into a big industrial facility, and shortly before the photo was taken the municipality authorized a 19 meter expansion of one of the stables. The expansion is close to Eckhard’s and Bente’s house, so their concerns will only get worse. The old couple has been living in their house for 32 years.
