Vandvaerksgaarden Factory Farm in Tingerup, Denmark
Fields in the area of the small town Tingerup with a few hundred residents. Tingerup is 60 kilometers west of Copenhagen, and three big factory pig farms are in the village or just outside. There are approx. 500 meters between each farm, and on this photo is one of them, called Vandvaerksgaarden.
Rural countrysides and small villages in the region are increasingly affected by the expansion of industrial pig farms in the immediate proximity of houses. Small farms are disappearing and residents reported frequent smells, noises, air pollution and health problems to Greenpeace Nordic in Denmark, which they attributed to the farm. Many locals worry that the disposal of great quantities of manure releases chemicals and toxic substances into the air. The farm is also known in the area for dumping dead pigs on the side of the nearby street.
