Action in Hamburg for Clean Air in Cities

For a consistent protection against toxic car exhausts, Greenpeace activists are demonstrating today to introduce the first diesel car bans in two busy streets in Hamburg. "Clean air for all!" is "written" on the sidewalk near a diesel banned street by using a high pressure cleaner, stencils and charcoal spray. On banners, the activist are demanding: "Traffic Turn Now!".

Action in Hamburg for Clean Air in Cities

German cities are under increasing pressure because the limits for harmful nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were exceeded again in more than 60 cities last year. Residents and Environmentalists are increasingly demanding better air quality.

Because pollution levels are falling too slowly, the European Commission has now filed a lawsuit against Germany.
At the same time, the growing number of referendums by and for cyclists such as in Berlin and Frankfurt, are calling for a fairer share of the space in inner-cities and for security.

According to the city's assessment, Hamburg's air pollution problem is much larger than originally expected and affects even more people's health.
