Greenpeace activists set up a manifestation in front of Ibama (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to support the institute's resistance to Total and BP oil companies and to ask for the institute to deny the licensing process for the companies to drill for oil near the Amazon Reef.
Professor Carlos Eduardo Leite Ferreira, PhD in Marine Biology for Fluminense Federal University, handed Ibama technicians the open letter signed by scientists from all over the world requesting the defense and protection of the newly discovered and unique biome.
