Mayak Nuclear Disaster 60th Anniversary — Macros
The nuclear disaster happened at the Mayak plant in the South Urals, where Rosatom stores and reprocesses spent nuclear fuel from power plants and research reactors. Today, six decades after the explosion, Mayak continues to contaminate the local Techa river with radioactive substances. It is a threat to thousands of people living in a dozen villages on the Techa banks, who use water from the river, eat fish and tend to the cattle.
