Soybean Plantation in the Brazilian Cerrado, Amapá State
Soybean plantation in the Cerrado area within the Amazon, Amapá state. The Cerrado is a vast ecosystem rich in carbon, biodiversity and culture, also known as Brazilian savanna.
Since early 2017, 47 areas have been embargoed by Ibama (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) for illegal deforestation in Amapá state, which amounts to at least 11.748 hectares. The problems in Amapá state are representatives of the problems faced throughout the Amazon during the agribusiness boom: deforestation, land grabbing and conflicts with local communities.
