Organic Rice Art at Ratchaburi in Thailand
Aerial shot of Greenpeace organic rice field in Ratchaburi Province, 200 kilometers South of Bangkok. Three months after the initial transplant, the rice is almost ready to harvest. The rice field, which measures 10 rai or 16,000 square meters, is located in Thailand's Central Plains, one of Southeast Asia's most fertile rice producing regions. The field is planted with two varieties of organic rice by local community together with Greenpeace supporters, volunteers and activists. The first variety, Chai-nat 1, is an irrigated local rice variety and the second is Khum Phayao, a traditional black rice variety.
The rice art, which celebrates Thailand's rich rice heritage, is meant to remind governments to protect the region's most important food crop from the threats of genetic engineering.
