Composite Photo of Apo Island Marine Protected Area
Divers from Silliman University, Coastal Conservation and Education foundation, and Greenpeace surveyed the massive coral damage in Apo Island caused by unprecedented and extreme weather events. The top photo shows healthy corals of a dive site, while the photo below shows damaged corals of a marine sanctuary, both taken at Apo Island, Dauin Negros Oriental.
The Marine Protected Area (MPA) was destroyed by Typhoon Pablo in December 2012. An increase in extreme weather events is one of the predicted effects of climate change.
