Lyttleton Coal Ship Action
The Rainbow Warrior attempts to block a shipment of coal from leaving Lyttleton Port for China by anchoring in its path. Three Greenpeace activists board the coal ship, Hellenic Sea, and attach themselves to its hull. The action highlights the double standards within the government’s climate policy. New Zealand is promoted as clean and green, yet every year NZ exports millions of tonnes of coal for use in other countries; effectively shipping climate change offshore. Greenpeace is calling for a domestic emissions reduction target of 30 per cent by 2020.
