Stop Deep Sea Oil Flotilla - East Cape Hui
The ‘Stop Deep Sea Oil’ flotilla arrives at Whangaparaoa Bay near East Cape and is welcomed by 600-700 people, mostly from local tribe te Whanau a Apanui which hosted a hui (meeting) to talk about proposals for deep sea oil drilling. The hui was called to stop Petrobras’ oil exploration plans and the Government’s current strategy of selling off the rights to drill for oil in the waters around New Zealand. The hui, which is attended by an estimated 600 people, welcomes skippers crew and activists from a flotilla of boats, which travelled from around the North Island to join what is expected to be the biggest protest against deep sea oil drilling in New Zealand's history.
