Thirty Greenpeace activists and Milieudefensie block the chlorine train of AKZO in Delfzijl. They protest against the production of chlorine and demand that the production is being stopped. The transport, production, usage and the procession of waste cause severe risks for the environment and there are good alternatives for all chlorine uses. Agent Orange, dioxin, DDT, PCB's and PCV all contain chlorine and many chlorine substances do not decompose readily or quickly in the environment. They mount up in organisms and are very toxic. The industry still produces yearly 40 million tonnes of chlorine. A week before the action AKZO got a permit to expand their production in Rotterdam.
