Greenpeace activists block the outflow pipe at AKZO in Delfzijl. AKZO discharges 5 times the amount of HCB's allowed by Dutch law directly into the North Sea. Akzo produces CFC's, PVC's and pesticides. The toxics AKZO discharges, poison a very vulnerable nature reserve: the Wadden Sea. Experts connect the chlorine compounds in the water with the diminished resistance of seals against all sorts of diseases. Activists block the outflow pipe and chain themselves. The police ends the action and arrests the five chained activists. The action takes place at the same day of the third conference of Ministers about the protection of the North Sea.
